Does Creatine Cause Bloating in Women?

‘Will creatine make me bloated?’ is one of the most common questions women ask before starting. It’s a fair worry — but the reality is more reassuring than the rumours suggest.

Where the myth comes from

Creatine draws a small amount of water into your muscle cells, which is part of how it works. Old-school ‘loading’ protocols (20g a day) could cause temporary fluid retention and tummy discomfort, and that’s where the bloating reputation began.

At a sensible daily dose, this effect is minimal and happens inside the muscle — not the kind of bloating that makes you feel puffy.

How to avoid stomach upset

Stick to 3–5g per day rather than loading. Take it with plenty of water, and ideally alongside food or a drink. Our Simple Creatine is micronised to dissolve well, which helps it sit more comfortably.

If you’re sensitive, split the dose or take it with a meal. See our full guide to how much creatine to take.

The bottom line

For the vast majority of women taking a normal daily dose, creatine doesn’t cause noticeable bloating. Any water it holds is in the muscle, supporting strength and recovery — not working against your goals.
